Welcome !
    Odetta
A highly esteemed folk musician whose career peaked in the early 1960s, Odetta is better known today for the musicians she's influenced (including Bob Dylan, Joan Armatrading and Jewel) than for her own recordings. Born on New Year's Eve, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, Odetta Gordon moved to Los Angeles with her family while still a young girl. She began showing signs of musical aptitude at the age of 10, and her mother enrolled her in classical voice training at the age of 13. Odetta's first professional gigs were in musical theater, but she soon became interested in folk music; discovered by Harry Belafonte while playing New York City coffeehouses, she made her first record, The Tin Angel, in 1954. Like most folk artists of the day, Odetta regularly worked old blues numbers into her repertoire, but her husky, flexible voice (and inherent ease with all manner of musical material) helped her to carve out a distinctive identity. She slipped into obscurity in the 1970s, and left the music business completely in the late 1980s, but returned in 1999 with the acclaimed Blues Everywhere I Go CD. That same year, President Bill Clinton presented Odetta with the National Endowment for the Arts' Medal of the Arts award, underlining her massive contributions to American music.
