Lady Saw
She’s the hottest female dancehall artist of the moment, thanks in large part to her X-rated sex talk, but there’s more to Lady Saw than meets the eye. Not everyone knows that her adopted daughter is a poor girl she met begging on the streets of Kingston, or that she built a house for her mother, fulfilling a promise made in one of her songs. Still, there’s no denying that when Saw takes the mic, things can get steamy in a hurry. The former Marion Hall wasted little time in establishing a foothold in the music industry; following a string of early ‘90s hits that included “Sycamore Tree,” she dropped her first long-player, Lover Girl, in 1994, and showed she could hang with the rudest of the rudies -- Shabba Ranks -- on the self-explanatory smash “Want It Tonight.” After her second album, 1997’s Passion, which contained a couple more star duets with Shaggy (“Mr. Lover Lover”) and Beenie Man (“Healing”), she’d racked up enough chart action to qualify for a pair of greatest hits albums. Her latest, 1999’s 99 Ways, keeps both the high-profile help and the slackness coming, thanks to appearances by Red Rat and Sanchez. Saw has also brought her lewd lyrics to other performers’ offerings, most notably guesting on Lexxus’ 1999 dancehall smash “Ring Mi Cellie” -- even after he’d bragged on an earlier track about her alleged desire to get busy with him! |
