Yngwie Malmsteen
The quintessential guitar hero of the 1980s, Yngwie Malmsteen fused classical influences with modern metal on such acclaimed albums as 1984's Rising Force and 1985's Marching Out, but it was his dazzling displays of manual dexterity that really endeared him to the better-shred-than-dead set. Born in 1964 in Sweden, Yngwie grew up internalizing the recordings of Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin, but also developed a fondness for classical greats like Paganini and Bach. In 1983, he moved to the US, and quickly established himself as the hit new guitar-slinger on the scene, thanks to albums he recorded with Steeler and Alcatrazz. Rising Force, his solo debut, was touted as a major event by guitar magazines around the world, and guitarists everywhere ruined their guitars trying to recreate the "scalloped" fretboard of Yngwie's customized Stratocaster. A major car accident temporarily derailed his career in the late '80s, and the burgeoning popularity of grunge, punk and alternative rock rendered Yngwie's dramatic music totally unfashionable in the '90s. He still boasts a sizeable (and rabid) cult following, however, and his latest record, The War To End All Wars, is due for release in November 2000. |
