Louis Hayes - Woody Shaw Quintet
A decorated veteran of the bop wars, Louis Hayes has been a professional drummer since the age of 18, signing on initially with Yusef Latef before graduating to regular gigs with Cannonball Adderly, Horace Silver, and Oscar Peterson before moving on to lead his own bands in the 1970s. A prolific session man, he's also appeared on record with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Dexter Gordon, George Benson, and McCoy Tyner, to name a few. In early 1977, he hooked up with trumpet great Woody Shaw to form the Louis Hayes-Woody Shaw Quintet, a hard bop ensemble whose magnificent interplay can be heard on the Lausanne 1977 CD. Shaw came up in the 1960s playing with Latin percussion legend Willie Bobo, and went on to play and record with the likes of Silver, Tyner, Gordon, Eric Dolphy, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Art Blakey and Jackie McLean. Though tremendously talented, Shaw never became a household name like his colleagues Miles Davis or Wynton Marsalis. In 1989, he died after being hit by a train. |

Drummer Hayes and trumpeter Shaw team up to deliver eight-and-a-half minutes of solid bop, highlighted by Ronnie Matthews' liquid piano solos. Sweet and swingin', with nary a trace of fusion in earshot.
