Welcome !
    John Lennon
As the Beatle who once proclaimed his band was “more popular than Jesus,” John Lennon will forever be known as an outspoken and talented artist who spoke his mind freely and never compromised his ideals. Born in the working class port of Liverpool, England in 1940, Lennon was an artistically-inclined teenage rebel whose enthusiasm for American blues and R&B – and rock ‘n roll -- would inform his history-making partnership with fellow Liverpudlian Paul McCartney. Together the duo of Lennon & McCartney would change the face of rock ‘n’ roll, redefine industry standards, and create a pop primer for countless musicians to follow. The Beatles’ momentous career was launched in 1962 with the UK release of the single “Love Me Do” and ended in 1970; in that time, the band released 46 top 40 singles and 26 charting albums, including Revolver, Rubber Soul, and the ubiquitous Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

After the Beatles dissolved, Lennon released several solo albums, many of which contained anti-pop, avant-garde collaborations with his performance-artist wife, Yoko Ono. Fans were confused by the non-melodic turnabout in style -- and Lennon’s solo work never reached the commercially accessible heights of his output with the Beatles. Perhaps his best-known solo album is the 1971 disc Imagine, which spawned a No. 3 hit in its title track. By 1975, Lennon, himself, was disenchanted with his career as a “pop icon” and disappeared from the public eye for five years to raise his son, Sean. The 1980 release Double Fantasy heralded his triumphant return to recording and the disc was met with glowing reviews by fans and critics alike, even spawning the No. 1 hit “(Just Like) Starting Over.” A happy and contented Lennon had produced a joyous, unabashedly rocking disc informed by his love for his family, and the record went on to win 1981’s Grammy award for album of the year. Tragically, Lennon did not live to receive the trophy: on Dec. 8, 1980, the artist’s brief comeback was cut short by an obsessed fan’s bullet. Posthumous releases of unfinished tracks, live recordings, and interview material followed. Fortunately for pop music fans, the remaining Beatles -- McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr -- continue to keep Lennon’s legacy alive with reissues of historic compilations and career retrospectives that continue to introduce the wonder of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s purest and most enduring talents to generations to come.
