Air
French duo Air caught the backside of America's electronica craze in the late-'90s; they showed off the genre's more soothing side with the lush sounds they coaxed out of their Moogs and other keyboards. The duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-BenoŚt Dunckel met in college in Paris in the early '90s, initially playing together in the alternative band Orange. By 1995 they had become Air. They released a few singles on the Mo' Wax and Source labels in 1996 and '97. But it was their 1998 full-length debut, Moon Safari, that brought them to the attention of the world at large, giving the band moderate hits in Britain with the singles "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars," and gaining them airplay on MTV. Air released a collection of their early singles as the LP Premiers Symptomes in 1999; in 2000, they released another full-length of original work as the soundtrack to the Sofia Coppola film The Virgin Suicides. |

Muzak for the techno set plays like a Burt Bacharach instrumental with gentle horns and tender strings. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! As light as… Air.
