Welcome !
    Gladys Knight & The Pips
One of the great groups of the soul era, Gladys Knight & The Pips scored ten #1 R&B hits (and thirty Top Tens) during the course of their thirty-six-year career. Formed in Atlanta in 1952 by Gladys (who was only eight at the time), her brother Merald, her sister Brenda and cousins William and Eleanor Guest, the Pips took their name from their manager, cousin James "Pip" Woods. The group was signed to Brunswick Records in 1958, but produced no hits to speak of. Brenda and Eleanor left in 1959, to be replaced by Edward Patten and Langston George (the latter of whom left in 1962). The Pips scored their first hit in 1961 with "Every Beat of My Heart," which surprised everyone by topping the R&B charts and hitting #6 Pop. Unfortunately, the group didn't really hit their commercial stride until 1967, when they signed with Motown's Soul subsidiary, and hit big with such Norman Whitfield productions as "Everybody Needs Love," "Friendship Train," and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." The group racked up hit after hit for Motown, then signed with Buddah Records in 1973. Massive crossover smashes like "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "I've Got To Use My Imagination" made Gladys a household name, and even helped the group land a summer replacement variety show in 1975. Like most soul acts, the Pips' fortunes waned considerably in the disco era, though they did manage to score another R&B #1 with 1983's "Save The Overtime (For Me)". Gladys went solo in 1989 with respectable success, and has recently gone into the restaurant business, opening her own soul food joint in Atlanta.
