A.F.I.
A.F.I. first joined forces in 1991 in Ukiah, CA, while singer Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vick, and drummer Adam Carson were all still in high school. Vick was soon replaced by Geoff Kresge, and the band gained a local following, releasing a split 7-inch with another local band, Loose Change, and the EP Behind The Times. As the members reached college age, they went their separate ways, Kresge going as far as moving to New Jersey (where he joined up with Blanks 77), but a well-received one-off reunion show in the mid-'90s led the boys to quit school to concentrate on A.F.I. full time. After a couple of singles, they signed to Nitro for their debut full-length, Very Proud of Ya, in 1996. After two more albums in 1997, the lineup started to shift, with Hunter replacing Kresge and Jade Puget (formerly of Redemption 87) taking Stopholese's place. The new line-up debuted on 1998's A Fire Inside EP, finally revealing what "A.F.I." stood for. The new line-up really clicked with fans, and a friendship with the Offspring didn't hurt, as follow-up full-lengths Black Sails in the Sunset (1999) and Art Of Drowning (2000) became progressively more successful. |

While an improvement over earlier efforts, A.F.I. still bring too many metal cliches to the table to be taken seriously by the hardcore scene.
