Coldplay
Singer Chris Martin, guitarist Jon Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion formed Coldplay in early 1998 while attending the University College of London. The four-piece quickly self-released an EP, The Safety, which garnered enough interest to get the follow-up EP, Brothers and Sisters, picked up by the Brit indie Fierce Panda. Though limited to 500 units apiece, the EP releases attracted Parlophone Records, which signed a UK deal with Coldplay in April 1999. The critically-acclaimed EP The Blue Room followed, and the band soon was being hailed as “the next Travis.” Coldplay released two more EPs, Shiver and Yellow, in early 2000, before at last releasing the full-length album, Parachutes. The disc was a smash hit, earning the band a Mercury Music Prize, and in November 2000, Parachutes was picked up for US release by Nettwerk. The song “Yellow” scored Stateside hit status after ABC-TV used the track to back its distinctively-colored network promos during the 2000 holiday season. Coldplay’s success continued into the new millennium, as the band was nominated for Best British Group, Best British Album, and Best British Newcomer in the 2001 Brit Awards.
