Welcome !
    James Brown
Call him "The Godfather of Soul," call him "The Minister of the New New Super Heavy Funk," or just call him Mr. Brown -- whatever handle he goes by, James Brown is unquestionably the single most influential individual in the popular music of the last 50 years. Born in South Carolina in 1933, Brown was raised in Georgia, where he briefly flirted with a life of petty crime before finding himself through music. He cut his first record, "Please Please Please" in 1955 with his vocal group the Famous Flames; the recording found its way to King Records owner Syd Nathan, who signed Brown to a contract in early 1956. The artist soon ranked as one of the most popular R&B singers of the era, thanks to heartfelt ballads like "Try Me" and upbeat dance tracks like "Night Train." His popularity further soared with the 1965 release of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)," which in turn presaged the groundbreaking funk riffs of 1967's "Cold Sweat." 1968's confrontational "Say it Loud -- I'm Black and I'm Proud" became an anthem for the burgeoning Black Power movement, and the next few years found Brown delving further into social commentary with tracks like "King Heroin" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved." Unfortunately, the Godfather found it hard to negotiate the more anonymous and uninspiring waters of the disco era; it wasn't until 1985's "Living in America" (from the film Rocky IV) that Brown returned to the Top 10. In 1988, the artist's penchant for smoking PCP led to a much-publicized car chase, arrest, and prison sentence. He was released in 1991, although he still seems to be dogged by countless personal problems. Whatever his shortcomings as an individual, however, the man's importance to soul, rock, funk, and rap music cannot be overstated. Brown's backing bands have included such legendary players as Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, and Bootsy Collins; he's been covered by everyone from Aerosmith to the Who; and his grooves have been sampled for countless rap and R&B recordings. Brown was the first to truly "find the funk," and folks like Sly & the Family Stone, P-Funk, Prince, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers owe their entire careers to him. Brown was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 1992.
