Welcome !
    Freddy Cole
Nat King Cole’s younger brother (he’s also Natalie Cole’s uncle) has pursued a musical career that’s stayed mostly out of the limelight enjoyed by his famous relatives. But proving that it’s never too late for stardom, Cole -- now in his 70s, and with a voice that bears an unmistakable resemblance to his older sibling’s -- has gained his greatest acclaim in recent years with a string of well-regarded albums on the Fantasy label. The Chicago native started playing piano at age five, but only got serious about music after an injury ended his dreams of an NFL career. He made his recorded debut in 1952 and had a hit, “Whispering Grass,” on the Okeh label the next year. However, he spent much of the next three decades playing supper clubs and occasionally recording for small labels, until founding his own First Shot label in the 1980s. Cole signed to Fantasy in the early 1990s, and enlisted a band that included pianist Cyrus Chestnut to deliver the richly romantic Circle of Love in 1993. That perked up the ears of critics, and subsequent releases -- especially including the 1995 set I’m Not My Brother, I’m Me -- made it clear Freddy Cole was his own man. Recent projects have included the 1999 album Le Grand Freddy, a collection of songs by the French composer Michael LeGrand, and Cole’s most recent release, 2000’s Merry-Go-Round.
