Ice-T Orphaned when his parents died in a car wreck, Tracy Morrow moved from Newark, N.J. to South Central Los Angeles, where he became interested in hip hop and poet Iceberg Slim, from whom he took his name. After high school, he appeared in several breakdance-oriented films, but his musical career didn't take off until 1987, when he signed to Sire Records and released his debut album, Rhyme Pays. By the following year, he'd gotten his own label, Rhyme Syndicate; by his third album, 1989's The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech...Just Watch What You Say, he was a certified rap star, as well as a sought-after spokesman on issues like censorship and politics. O.G.:Original Gangster, released in 1991, was another strong effort, and Ice-T's movie career took off after he appeared in New Jack City that same year. He also appeared on the Lollapalooza tour, then shifted gears and formed a heavy metal band - Body Count. That band's debut contained the controversial "hit," "Cop Killer," which led to a national outcry and helped sour the relationship between Ice-T and his parent record label Warner Brothers. The label wouldn't release his next album, the back-to-hip-hop title Home Invasion (which eventually came out on Priority), and two more Body Count albums and 1996's Return Of The Real weren't big sellers. Ice-T signed to Atomic Pop in 1999. |
