Tuatara
With its critically-acclaimed 1997 debut Breaking the Ethers, “jamband” supergroup Tuatara crossed the invisible line from miscellaneous side-project into bonafide band. Members include guitarist Peter Buck, drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, bassist Justin Harwood of Luna, and single-named sax man extraordinaire Skerik; their combined efforts produce a lush landscape of energetic and funky instrumentals that are tough to label. Words like “majestic,” “turbulent,” “expansive,” and just plain “rocking” have been used to describe Tuatara’s ever-evolving sound.
The 1998 disc Trading with the Enemy arrived with additional players on the roster: Young Fresh Fellows’ Scott McAughey, Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, percussionist Elizabeth Pupo-Walker, horn players Christopher Littlefield and Craig Flory, and multi-instrumentalist Mike Stone. Selective touring and the appearance on several critics’ Top 10 lists have cemented the band’s validity, independent of the players’ “full-time” gigs in other groups. The evocative and visual music suggests a future in soundtracks and film scores.
A new and exclusive Tuatara track, “25th Street and Sixth Avenue,” can be heard on the MusicBlitz album Gina Figliuolo Presents JAMS (Vol.1, Don’t Call Us Jambands). |
