Half Pint
Lindon Roberts is a Kingston, Jamaican native who got his nickname as a child, thanks to his small stature. He sang in the school choir as a boy, and after completing secondary school, he began touring with several sound systems during dancehall's infancy in the late '70s. Half Pint's own recording career began shortly afterward, working with producers like Prince Jammy, and he got even wider attention when the Rolling Stones borrowed his hit "Winsome," which they turned into the song "Too Rude." By the late '80s, Half Pint had taken a break from recording, beyond the occasional single (like the 1992 hit "Substitute Lover"), but 1999 saw him return with a vengeance. A collaboration with the Long Beach Dub All Stars -- former Sublime members whose hit with that band, "What I Got," borrowed a Half Pint lick -- on the Right Back album turned into some tour appearances with the All Stars that garnered great reviews. The first new Half Pint album in a decade, Closer To You, followed later that year, and a new greatest hits compilation followed in 2000. |
