Scientist
One of the legends of dub reggae, Scientist (Overton Brown) got his start at the feet of the master: As a teenager, he served as an engineer at the Jamaican studio of King Tubby, who is credited with inventing dub. But Scientist (nicknamed for his electronics wizardry) was soon creating dub mixes that rivaled his mentor’s in out-there reorganization of sound. Before he was 20, he'd been snapped up by Channel One Studios, where he became chief engineer. Scientist faced off against Prince Jammy and others on a series of best-selling early-80s dub albums on Greensleeves. By 1985, he'd moved to Silver Spring, MD, where he currently resides, still doing production work and indulging his genius for dub. |
