Jimmy Cliff
One of reggae's most popular international stars, thanks in part to his appearance in the early '70s film The Harder They Come. Prior to the movie, Cliff had been an internationally noted figure -- he was signed to Island Records and won praise from Bob Dylan and Paul Simon -- but his soundtrack album for The Harder They Come (he sang several tracks in the movie) became one of the best-selling reggae albums in history. Cliff subsequently was eclipsed by Bob Marley as reggae's most visible artist, but a string of popular late 70s albums showed he wasn't to be dismissed; his high, keening tenor and savvy appropriation of genres of R&B and pop made him a force to be reckoned with. He continues to be a popular concert draw worldwide, and even enjoyed a big U.S. hit in 1993 with a cover of “I Can See Clearly Now” from the Cool Runnings soundtrack. |
