Josey Wales
Winston Sterling was one of many Jamaican deejays that emerged from the sound systems in the late 1970s to usher in the age of dancehall. But Sterling, who chose the stage name Josey Wales after the Clint Eastwood western, was more successful than most. He became the primary challenger of the island's most popular deejay, Yellowman, and recorded a series of hits that began with the 1983 smash "Leggo Mi Hand" (backed by the Roots Radics) and also included the tune "Drug Abusing" from his second album. In 1985, Wales teamed up with hot dancehall producer King Jammy; the pairing created the hits "It's Raining" and "Must Say Something." The Outlaw, as he's called, has since made guest appearances with Super Cat and Beres Hammond, as well as assembling a star-studded roster of friends (including Dillinger and old deejay rival Charlie Chaplin) for the recent Josey Wales and the All-Stars album. |
