Boozoo Chavis
Formerly known as "The Lake Charles Atom Bomb," Boozoo Chavis is better known these days as the reigning "King of Zydeco." Many musicologists consider Boozoo to be the last living link between modern zydeco and the Creole sounds of a long-vanished era. While his predecessor, the late Clifton Chenier, favored the piano accordion, Boozoo uses the more traditional diatonic accordion to produce energetic flurries of smile-inducing notes. Boozoo made several recordings for the Goldband label during the late 1950s and early 1960s, then split from the Louisiana zydeco scene for the better part of two decades. His return in the mid-80s gave the music a much-needed shot in the arm, and he continues to impress zydeco audiences both young and old with his ribald humor and squeezebox mastery. |
