Jimmy Johnson
The older brother of famed Chicago soul man Syl Johnson, guitarist Jimmy Johnson packs plenty of old-school soul into his personalized brand of West Side blues. Born in 1928, Jimmy spent the first part of his professional career playing in R&B bands behind such noted performers as Otis Clay and Denise LaSalle. It was only in the mid-'70s that he really made his name as a blues player, thanks to high-profile gigs with Jimmy Dawkins and Otis Rush. Jimmy cut his first album, Johnson's Whacks, in 1979, and by the late '80s he'd become one of the most in-demand performers on the Chicago scene. His career took a tragic turn in late 1988, when the van he was driving swerved off the road, killing his bassist and keyboard player. Jimmy retired for several years following the accident, but returned in second half of the '90s to release several strong outings. |
