Ash
Scoring its first UK Top 20 hit when the three members were about to graduate from high-school, punk-pop act ASH took the Brit music scene by storm in the mid-'90s. Hailing from the unlikely town of Ulster, Northern Ireland, the band got its start in the late '80s as a duo of 12-year-old heavy-metal fans. Eventually, they found a drummer, and punk and indie sounds overtook their metal influences. ASH released an indie single and EP before recording its major-label debut, 1977, which entered the British charts at number one. The band added another guitarist before releasing its second album, Nu-Clear Sounds, in 1998. |

Alternative |
There are Velvet Underground influences to spare in this glammy, gritty track from Ireland's modern rock rebels.
