Hailing from the unlikely town of Ulster, Northern Ireland, the band got its start in the late '80s as a duo of 12-year-old heavy-metal fans. Eventually, they found a drummer, and punk and indie sounds overtook their metal influences. ASH released an indie single and EP before recording its major-label debut, 1977, which entered the British charts at number one.
