Townes Van Zandt
Along with Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt is probably the single most important singer-songwriter of the alternative country movement. He got his start in typical '60s folkie fashion -- by playing local gigs in coffeehouses, eventually graduating to high-profile gigs in Houston and other major cities in Texas. His literate, deeply emotional songs quickly garnered him a recording contract and a great deal of critical cache, but popular success evaded Van Zandt for his entire career -- perhaps it's no wonder. There are no happy endings in Van Zandt's music, just the grim realities of heartbreak, loss and the truth at the bottom of a bottle. And while his recorded output was inspired until the end, Townes' latter day concerts were hit-and-miss affairs that mirrored the strain of his battles with addiction and manic depression. Still, he continued touring rigorously until his death on January 1st, 1997. Van Zandt's reputation has continued to mushroom since his passing, thanks to word of mouth from acolytes and contemporaries like Steve Earle and Guy Clark -- and the critical reception of the posthumous release A Far Cry From Dead. |
