XTC
Bassist Colin Moulding and guitarist Andy Partridge are the core of XTC, whose ever-more-lush pop sound has ridden waves of critical success almost since the band’s formation in 1976 as Star Park. Signed to Virgin in the wake of the punk movement, XTC debuted in 1977 with the herky-jerky EP 3D. The band’s rising career hit a bump in 1982, when Partridge suffered health problems related to stage fright: XTC vowed never to tour again. As a studio-only project, they released a passel of acclaimed records, including the Todd Rundgren-produced Skylarking and their biggest US hit, 1989’s Oranges and Lemons. Looking to The Kinks, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys for inspiration, the bandmembers also dabbled in psychedelia under the pseudonym The Dukes of Stratosphear. A royalty dispute with Virgin led to nearly a decade of silence before XTC signed to TVT Records and released the glorious Apple Venus, Pt. 1 in 1998 |

These Beatlesque purveyors of pure pop pleasure are guilty as charged. Now if only the judge would stop humming along and impose a sentence....

XTC was Brit-pop before Brit-pop was cool. Hear an Andy Partridge work-in-progress in this bare-bones version of the scathing tell-off, "Your Dictionary."
