Carl Cox
Diana Ross’s “Love Hangover” was the first record Carl Cox ever bought. Born in Manchester, England, in 1962, Cox began his DJ career as an eight-year-old manning the stereo at family parties. By the age of 15, he was earning money with his own turntables. He spun disco, rare grooves, and hip-hop, but he came into his own during Britain’s late ‘80s acid-house explosion. Moving to Brighton in 1986, Cox played the crucial clubs and events of the burgeoning rave scene. In 1989, he established himself as a pioneer with his use of three (rather than the usual two) mixing decks. Recording for fellow DJ Paul Oakenfold’s label, Cox had two mainstream hit singles in the early ‘90s, but he was dissatisfied with rave’s high-BPM evolution. Forming his own label and management company, Cox began playing smaller events and recording a studio album. Voted Best DJ by various dance-music publications, Cox finally released a studio album in America in 1999. |
