Majek Fashek
A Nigerian-born reggae artist who's become one of Africa's biggest musical stars, Majek Fashek has been hailed in his homeland as a prophet. He got the tag honestly, when his 1987 single "Send Down The Rain" was credited with helping end a terrible Nigerian drought. But he's also learned a trick or two about the spiritual qualities of music from both his mother (who got him his first gigs, playing maracas during religious ceremonies) and the late, great bandleader Fela Kuti, with whom he became friendly later in life. After spending time as the guitarist in the band Jah Stix, Fashek went solo and became an immediate African hit with his 1988 debut album, Prisoner of Conscience. A second album, Spirit Of Love, won rave reviews when it was released on Interscope Records in 1991, and, after a long musical drought, he released the appropriately-titled Rainmaker six years later. He's also deepend his connection with the Jamaican music he loved as a youth, serving as a producer on a compilation released in 1998 on the Marleys' Tuff Gong label. |
