Mercyful Fate
One of the most influential metal bands of the last twenty years, Denmark's Mercyful Fate has long been revered for its bare-fanged musical attack and liberal use of occult imagery. Lead singer King Diamond sports KISS-like makeup and sings with an impressive multi-octave range, and the band's theatrical live performances take the rudiments of Alice Cooper's stage shows to ever more satanic extremes. Formed in the early eighties, Mercyful Fate broke up after two albums (including 1984's Don't Break The Oath, which is now regarded as a masterpiece of the Black Metal movement) over the usual "musical differences." King Diamond went on to enjoy a fairly successful solo career, but bands like Metallica and Cradle of Filth continued to namecheck Mercyful Fate as a major influence, thus cementing the band's legendary status. Mercyful Fate reunited in 1993, and has been recording and touring steadily ever since. |
