Blimp
Ventura, California resident Dave Girtsman roped in a few musicians, put together a bunch of dark, acoustic songs and slapped the name Blimp on the project. But while others contributed to his tracks, collected on the Vinyl Luxury Liner CD, Blimp’s eccentric vision is Girtsman’s own. His self-professed influences include Elvis Costello and XTC, but it’s Tom Waits who’s most obviously shaped Girtsman’s sound, from his use of slide mandolin, cello and odd percussive rattles to his voice, which can aspire to Wait’s trademark growl. Most times, though, Girtsman restricts himself to soft, almost nerdy vocals, relating oddball stories about the bogeyman, as well as touching songs of failed relationships, with a captivating level of emotion. |
