Before the emergence of Motown, "Mr. Rhythm" was innovating rhyming styles as the frontman for The Five Dollars, as a solo artist, and as the auteur of bizarre spoken word (!) cuts like "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait." In the early 1960's, he arranged and produced material for nascent R&B acts in the Chicago scene, writing "Shake a Tail Feather" for the 5 Du Tones, among others. He also kept busy dropping hits of his own ("Cadillac Jack") on the Chess label.
