Andre Williams
In the world of rap and R&B, Andre Williams (b. 1936) stands as perhaps the most influential force you've never heard of. Before the emergence of Motown, "Mr. Rhythm" was innovating rhyming styles as the frontman for The Five Dollars, as a solo artist, and as the auteur of bizarre spoken word (!) cuts like "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait." In the early 1960's, he arranged and produced material for nascent R&B acts in the Chicago scene, writing "Shake a Tail Feather" for the 5 Du Tones, among others. He also kept busy dropping hits of his own ("Cadillac Jack") on the Chess label. Williams continues to write and record today, still down and dirty and fiercely original. |
