Anthony Michael Hall
You remember him best as the kid who made John Hughes' 80s teen flicks click. Like many young (and old) thespians before him, Anthony Michael Hall has found the lure of music irresistible. The Boston native gained widespread exposure after appearing as Chevy Chase's son in the first National Lampoon Vacation film, but he really hit his stride after being cast in Hughes' Sixteen Candles in 1984. He repeated his success with gloriously geeky roles in The Breakfast Club and Weird Science the following year, then went on to become the youngest-ever member of Saturday Night Live. But Hall left the show after just one season to enter rehab, and turned down roles in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Hughes' own Pretty In Pink because he feared being typecast. He also left the cast of Full Metal Jacket after clashing with the late Stanley Kubrick; his own starring vehicles, like Out Of Bounds and Johnny Be Good were flops. Hall maintained a much lower profile in the '90s, with small parts in films like Edward Scissorhands, and also began taking on the dual role of director (1994's Hail Caesar). He did, however, make a bit of a comeback splash as Bill Gates in the Emmy nominated made-for-TV movie Pirates of Silicon Valley. He hooked up with ex-Guns 'N Roses guitarist Gilbey Clark and Prince sideman Tommy Barbarella to assist in the making of his first album, Welcome To..The Hall of Mirrors, recorded in Miami. Hall is currently at work on a follow-up, and is to appear in the film The Caveman's Valentine with Samuel L. Jackson. |
