Queen Ida
Ida Guillory is truly the Queen of Zydeco music. As Zydeco's first female bandleader, she's been letting the good times roll for over a quarter of a century. Born in 1929 to a Creole family in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Ida learned piano from her mother while she was still a young girl, and picked up the accordion shortly thereafter. When her family moved to the San Francisco area, Ida took her squeezebox along with her, but waited until the early '70s (when her own children had finally grown up and left the house) to turn professional. Though she rarely records, Queen Ida has developed a worthy reputation as a non-stop touring machine -- in 1988, she became the first Zydeco artist to tour Japan -- and she remains a sought-after festival attraction to this day. |
