Rocker T
Brooklyn native Rocker T has navigated between a variety of musical styles in his career, but he’s always returned to the sounds of Jamaica. A veteran of the New York City music scene, Rocker T first attracted notoriety for his involvement in the city’s growing ragga/dancehall scene during the mid-‘80s. The vocalist/guitarist/producer formed the band Skadanks in 1986, and after paying its dues on the club scene, the group’s blend of reggae and hip-hop found a home on Elektra Records in 1994, with the album Give Thanks (it wasn’t the first major-label appearance for Rocker T, however: he’d showed up on a 1993 Sony rap-metal album by Smokin’ Suckas Wit’ Logic). In the ‘90s, Rocker T turned his attention to ska, often appearing with Big Apple ska bands like the Stubborn All-Stars, but also kept active as a solo artist and ran a reggae sound system, Jah Warrior Shelter Hi Fidelity. His latest effort, an EP for Positive Sound Massive Recordings, showcases Rocker T’s trademark “sing-jay” style -- a blend of toasting and singing attempted by a select few Jamaican artists. |
