The Jesus Lizard
After the 1987 split of Austin post-punk noise quartet Scratch Acid, guitarist/bass player David Sims joined ex-Big Black member Steve Albini in the group Rapeman. But his new band performed and played only intermittently, so Sims reunited with Scratch Acid vocalist David Yow to form the Jesus Lizard. The trio -- which included guitarist Duane Denison -- used a drum machine to pick up Scratch Acid’s industrial/noise banner, later adding drummer Mac McNeilly. The Jesus Lizard was soon releasing records on the Chicago indie label Touch & Go, with Albini serving as producer. The band’s raw, visceral music and Yow’s unpredictable (and most times uncontrollable) stage antics earned a loyal cult following. In 1992, a split single with the post-Nevermind Nirvana (“Puss”/”Oh the Guilt”), brought the Jesus Lizard to the attention of major labels. Capitol Records won the band over in 1995, though their signing alienated the fiercely independent Albini. And he may have been right; the Jesus Lizard never hit a stride at Capitol, releasing two disappointing records before disbanding in 1999. |
