Bookie Ranks
A living example of reggae’s new multicultural sound, Michael Bookbinder was born in London; lived in Jamaica and Puerto Rico, where he soaked up the sounds of Latin music and reggae; and then moved to the U.S., where he became captivated by the burgeoning hip-hop scene. He started his musical career in the late 80s, renaming himself Bookie Ranks and appearing as a guest toaster atop several traveling Jamaican sound systems. Ranks’ stint in Puerto Rico gave him the chance to work with Spanish reggae producer DJ Eric, and he later collaborated on an album with the legendary “Riddim Twins,” Sly and Robbie. Today he’s a resident of South Florida, but his bilingual cocktail of Latin hip-hop and dancehall has made him a rising international star. |
