Terry Radigan
Chances are you haven’t heard of Terry Radigan -- but you will. On “Blink,” her exclusive MUSICBLITZ single, the New York native brings over a decade of dues paid as both songwriter and performer to bear. From the song’s densely layered tapestry of sound, to the wry, worldly-wise lyrics, “Blink” announces Radigan as a songwriting force to be reckoned with.
Before moving to Nashville, Brooklyn-bred Radigan did a short stint as a rhythm guitarist in the New York band Grace Pool (replacing critic’s darling Shawn Colvin) in the late ‘80s. Her debut album, 1995’s Pawnbroker’s Daughter wasn’t a hit, though she did begin to carve out a substantial reputation as a songwriter, eventually penning hits for Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, and other contemporary country performers. In creating her latest album, Radigan (with producer Justin Nubank), she let her wide-range of musical tastes run rampant, drawing poetic inspiration from legendary divas ranging from Sarah Vaughan to Patsy Cline. These ladies reverberate in the haunting undertones of Radigan, though the rich blend of music, and the sharp, biting lyrics add up to a sound that is completely contemporary.
The single “Blink” is a perfect example -- the lyrics challenge the listener to pay attention to the small slanted details of the world. “Blink, and there’s no telling what you’ll miss,” she sings, yet the words themselves are shadowed under vast, unyielding, waves of the music. Throughout, Radigan’s sultry, childlike voice mirrors this contradiction, with just a hint of sarcasm. “Blink” makes it crystal clear that as a musician and songwriter, Terry Radigan is no waif -- she’s the voice of hard-won experience.
