Jah Mel
Born in Kingston, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist JahMel moved to the U.S. at a young age, and was discovered by producer Roydale Anderson while performing in a Rochester, N.Y. dancehall in the early ‘80s. An impressed Anderson took the youth back to Jamaica to record an acclaimed debut album, Watchful Eyes, which featured original Wailers rhythm section Aston “Family Man” Barrett on bass and his brother Carlton on drums. JahMel next teamed with his brother, bassist Michael O’Connor, to form the band JahMel and the Rhythm Factory. Though they were a popular touring group in the U.S., after their breakup JahMel went into exile for some time, and didn’t reemerge until moving back to Jamaica in 1996. There, he began working with Ziggy Marley’s rhythm section, bassist Chris Meredith and drummer Squidley Cole, and he’s also teamed with Bronx toaster Ruffian for an album of hip-hop/dancehall style recordings, Final Score. A compilation of old and new material, Now and Then, which features tracks with the Barretts and Sly and Robbie, is also available at www.jahmel.com |

Reggae |
It ain’t the blues, but it sure does rock: sweet-and-sour chatting and a loopy, singsong tune sell this hip-hop dancehall winner.
