Sarah Vaughan
Along with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan ranks as one of the greatest female jazz singers. The New Jersey-born vocalist started singing in Earl "Fatha" Hines' big band during the 1930s; she later sang in Billy Eckstine's orchestra, where she worked alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Following a stint with John Kirby during the mid-'40s, Vaughan spent the rest of her career as a solo artist. She's best known for the wide range of her voice and her vibrato; she was also one of the first singers to add bop phrasing to her singing. Recording into the early 1980s, Vaughan passed away in 1990 at the age of 65. |
