One Percent Hangout
Good thing Chima Nwala was an accounting major in college -- it would take some quick calculations to follow the Nigerian MC’s rapid rhymes. But Nwala didn’t calculate that he’d end up the CEO of his own label when he left New York in the early ‘90s to attend college in the Pacific Northwest. After joining a songwriters’ group, he bought some cheap equipment and started to make demos. By 1995, he’d formed his own label, Hangout Recordings, and released his first single, “Rude Awakening,” which was fueled by his love of socially-conscious R&B, hip-hop and reggae stars like Bob Marley and KRS-One. The next year, he graduated from the University of Washington, incorporated his label, and plunged into the music business full-time. “Yum Yum” was the new company’s first official single -- an energetic blend of ragga and hip-hop that leaves a good aftertaste. |
