He showed up on a pair of mid-‘90s albums by the Crooklyn Dub Consortium, a loose-knit group of artists interested in stretching the bounds of dub reggae. Then the Doc went solo on 1996’s Seven Tales of Israel, which continued those eclectic dub experiments without losing the essence of roots reggae and its heavy political and spiritual concerns. After collaborating with another group of hometown musicians, the Brooklyn Jungle Soundsystem, on the 1997 Next Step album (which fused the budding sounds of electronica to reggae), Dr. Israel took a quantum leap forward. On 1998’s Inna City Pressure, the Doc wrapped all of his disparate influences into a package that turned up on several prominent critics’ year end “best-of” lists. In early 2000, Product Three, an earlier collaboration with the Trumystic Soundsystem, was re-released; meanwhile, Dr. Israel began rehearsing with a new band, Seven, to give his new material a more rock-oriented edge.     Dr. Israel Coppers (featuring Rancid) MP3 Punk, Reggae The good Doc locks horns with Rancid and cranks out a rocking reggae soundclash.
