David Ornette Cherry When you bear the name of two jazz legends, you’d better be good if you go into the music business yourself. Luckily, keyboardist David Ornette Cherry doesn’t let his namesakes down on this MUSICBLITZ Exclusive, “First Time Out,” (featuring Justo Almario on tenor sax, Reggie Carson on bass, Don Littleton on drums, and Rahmlee on trumpet) an ingeniously arranged slice of melodic post-bop. Yet another of the late jazz trumpeter Don Cherry’s musical offspring (including sisters Neneh and Jan, and brother is Eagle Eye), David (born in 1958) grew up surrounded by jazz greats, including his namesake, Ornette Coleman. But it was a wood-chopping accident in Sweden that gave the 16-year-old David Cherry his jazz chops: laid up for the summer, all he could do was practice piano, with his dad as the teacher. By the fall, he’d played his first gig with his father, in Gothenburg, and was ready for further musical adventures. He studied composition at Bishop College in Dallas and world music at the California Institute of the Arts, before diving into regular summer courses at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock. There, he had the opportunity to collaborate with big names like African percussionist Babatunde Olatunji, who opened his ears to the possibilities of “world music” years before the term became popular. After honing his skills as a sideman for jazz musicians like Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, and of course, his father, David Cherry was ready to pursue his own musical vision, which he’s dubbed “multi-kulti.” Cherry used bits of everything from ethnic styles to hip-hop on his acclaimed 1999 album The End of a Century, but “First Time Out” is much more in a mid-‘60s jazz vein. Alternating passages of muted, Miles-like trumpet with a clever, brassy main motif, the tune also gives Cherry ample room to show off his thoughtful piano style -- proving that Don didn’t write the last word on jazz in the Cherry family. -- Dan LeRoy Dan LeRoy is the music and entertainment writer for the Charleston Daily Mail.
