Robert Belfour
Born in 1940 in the vicinity of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Robert Belfour is your classic "late-blooming" bluesman. Though he's been playing guitar since the 1950s, when he learned by playing along with the Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins and Howlin' Wolf cuts he heard coming out of his mother's radio, he didn't really begin playing professionally until he was in his forties. Though he relocated to Memphis in 1968, and has since become something of a fixture on the Beale Street scene, his personal brand of acoustic blues remains distinctly rural. Known to friends and fans as "Wolfman," because of his special affinity for the music of Howlin' Wolf, Belfour has been a popular performer at European blues festivals for several years. His first US album, What's Wrong With You, was released by the Fat Possum label in May 2000. |
