Queensryche
Of all the bands to emerge from the American metal scene in the 1980s, Queensryche seemed like one of the most unlikely to find mainstream success. At a time when metal fans generally split their allegiance between trash-metal warriors like Metallica or Slayer, and Sunset Strip bad boys like Poison and Guns 'n Roses, Queensryche scored a devoted following by crafting intelligent, emotional music that owed a substantial debt to Pink Floyd, Queen, and Rush. Formed in Bellevue, Washington in 1981 by guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton, vocalist Geoff Tate, drummer Scott Rockenfield and bassist Eddie Jackson, Queensryche made a local splash with their debut EP, 1983's Queen of the Reich, before signing a longterm deal with Capitol Records. After finally rising above cult status with the 1988 rock opera Operation: Mindcrime, the band broke through to multi-platinum with 1990's Empire, which featured such hits as "Jet City Woman" and "Silent Lucidity." The rest of the '90s proved rougher going, however, as the increasing popularity of grunge and rap-metal tooka huge bite out of Queensryche's record sales. Despite the poweful presence of Tate, who remains one of the best vocalists in the hard rock business, many Queensryche fans feel that the band just hasn't been the same without DeGarmo, who left shortly after the release of 1997's Hear In The Now Frontier. |
