Big Bill Morganfield
No matter how large his physical stature may be, Big Bill Morganfield has some mighty gigantic shoes to fill. After all, the father of this Chicago-born, Atlanta-based bluesman was none other than the great McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters. Though Morganfield was born in 1956, at the height of his father's career, he didn't pick up the guitar until after his father died in 1983. Determined to pay tribute to his father by carrying on in his footsteps (Muddy often lamented the fact that younger black men seemed to have little interest in the blues), Morganfield earned his living as an English teacher by day, and locked himself away with his father's records -- as well as his old guitar and stage amp -- at night. After jamming with guitarist Lonnie Mack at an Atlanta blues festival in 1989, Morganfield decided that he was ready to take his act on the road. After a decade of hard touring, Morganfield released his first full-length CD, Rising Son, on Blind Pig Records. The album (which received rave reviews from blues publications around the world) was produced by Muddy's longtime friend and guitarist Bob Margolin, and features contributions from Pinetop Perkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, both of whom also played with his dad. |
