Fastball
Although Fastball's recent fortunes have risen very quickly, the members have long histories behind them. Joey Shuffield was the drummer with the Wild Seeds, a critically acclaimed Texas indie band back in the late '80s, eventually hooking up with guitarist and fellow Austinite Miles Zuniga in a major label project called Big Car. Bassist Tony Scalzo, a Southern Californian, moved to Austin and wound up in a band with Shuffield called Superego. Shuffield introduced Zuniga to Scalzo, and the trio finally resolved to work together, forming Magneto in 1994. Renamed Fastball, they released their debut album, Make Your Mama Proud, on Hollywood in 1996. After working the road for two solid years, Fastball returned to the studio in 1998 and came away with a new album, All the Pain Money Can Buy -- its captivating first single, "The Way," based on a true story of a missing elderly couple, was the #1 Modern Rock track in the summer of 1998, and its success pushed the album into the Top 20. Fastball continued to tour relentlessly behind Pain, opening for Everclear and making successful appearances at the H.O.R.D.E. Festival. |
