Bouncing Souls
The light-hearted punk-rock band Bouncing Souls was together for nearly 10 years before catching the attention of Epitaph Records. Friends since their high-school days in suburban New Jersey, singer Greg Attonitoi, guitarist Peter Steinkept, bass player Brian Kienlen, and drummer Shal Khichi officially formed a band in 1987. The quartet relocated to New York City, and released a slew of singles and EPs on its own label, CHUNKSAAH (distributed for many years by BYO Records, the DIY company started by Youth Brigade’s Sean Stern). Relentless touring with like-minded acts such as NOFX, the Descendents, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones as well as two CHUNKSAAH full-lengths led to the Bouncing Souls’ Epitaph contract. The group’s first Epitaph release was a 1997 self-titled album, broadening the audience for its fun-loving punk sound. The following year saw the release of a live EP, Tie One On. The Souls’ fourth full-length, Hopeless Romantic, appeared in 2000, named for the group’s “hopeless” tendency to romanticize everything from the ‘80s to BMX bikes. |
