Def Squad
Rapper/producer Erick Sermon was born in Long Island, NY in 1968. In 1987, he and fellow Long Islander Parrish Smith formed seminal hardcore rap duo, EPMD (Erick & Parrish Making Dollars). With their ’88 debut classic, Strictly Business, EPMD instantly became one of the standout acts of rap’s Golden Era. Three classic albums followed. After a nasty break-up, Sermon, aka the Green-Eyed Bandit aka E Double released solo projects, produced for other artists and headed up the hip-hop super-alliance, The Def Squad, which includes Redman and Keith Murray. He reunited with Smith for a stint in 1997. In 2000, he released The Def Squad Presents Erick Onassis, essentially a Sermon solo record featuring a number of cameos. With a fairly straightforward rapping style, Sermon is today recognized more for his skills behind the boards, relying heavily on funk stylings and samples. |
