Stubborn All-Stars
The Stubborn All-Stars came together in 1994, as a one-off side project conceived by singer/trombonist Jeff "King Django" Baker (Skinnerbox, ex-Boilers, ex-Murphy's Law), one of the most important figures in modern-day ska-influenced music. Carefully selecting some of the top musicians on the scene at the time, Django's original intent was to record a four song 7-inch exploring the roots of traditional ska music. When that 7-inch (the Old's Cool EP) and the album that followed (1995's Open Season) proved extremely popular, the band became a semi-permanent outfit. SAS record around a nucleus of players based in New York's Version City studios, including Victor Ruggiero (the Slackers, keys), "Agent" Jay Nugent (ex-Agent 99, guitar), and Victor Rice (ex-Scofflaws/New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, bass). That core line-up is filled out with stellar guest appearances from around the world of ska, including the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Roman Fleysher (tenor sax) and the Toasters' Lord Sledge (trumpet) on their latest release, 1999's Nex Music. |
