Welcome !
    Ian Astbury
Ian Astbury's musical aspirations go back nearly two decades, when he formed the volume-drenched Southern Death Cult in 1981. The group was an immediate sensation in its native England, playing for huge crowds, releasing well-regarded singles, and opening for the likes of Bauhaus. Through a number of name changes (dropping first the "Southern" tag, and then the "Death" designation as well), and a number of personnel alterations, the Cult continued to refine its sound, until the mid-'80s, when the band scored big with tracks like the #1 UK single "Spiritwaker" in 1984, "She Sells Sanctuary" in 1985 (taken from the goth classic Love), and the band's big American breakthrough, the Rick Rubin-produced Electric, which spawned the 1987 hit "Love Removal Machine." The "big rock" sound of 1989's Sonic Temple brought the Cult worldwide acclaim, but the band would never quite hit this stride again; they released two more lackluster albums before Astbury disbanded the Cult, ostensibly for the last time, in 1995. After his new group, the Holy Barbarians, failed to make an impact, he reformed the Cult in 1999 and helped assemble the greatest hits package Pure Cult earlier this year.
