Pharoahe Monch Troy Jamerson was born in Queens, NY. A chronic asthmatic, he overcame his handicap to become one-half of the hyper-creative, lyrically abstract underground duo, Organized Konfusion. Their 1991 debut, O.K. was followed by two other critically-lauded, but commercially lackluster discs (1994’s Stress: The Extinction Agenda and 1997’s The Equinox). In 1999, he took the same innovative, word-flipping style that made O.K. such a hit with rap’s “cellar dwellers,” and added just enough commercial polish to make things more accessible to the hip-hop community at large. Propelled by the blistering street anthem, “Simon Says,” Monch’s solo debut, Internal Affairs finally gave him the widespread respect (and SoundScans) that evaded him for a decade. |
