Welcome !
    Sonic Youth
Few bands laid more of a foundation for alternative rock than Sonic Youth. The quartet of Thurston Moore (guitars), Lee Ranaldo (guitars), Kim Gordon (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums) took the art form of “noise rock” to new heights, later incorporating their free-form compositions into more pop-oriented songs. Moore, Ranaldo and Gordon formed Sonic Youth in 1981 in New York City, when the No Wave movement was in full swing. After releasing a few albums on small indie labels, the band signed to SST and released EVOL in 1986. EVOL made Sonic Youth regulars on college radio, while 1987's Sister gained them rave reviews in the mainstream press. Their real breakthrough, though, came with Daydream Nation in 1998. The album was hailed as a masterpiece and produced the college radio hit "Teenage Riot." The band moved to the major label DGC in 1990; their deal gave them complete creative control, setting a precedent for alternative bands wishing to maintain indie aesthetics on a major label. 1990's Goo became their first release on DGC, and their first album to break into the Top 100. They followed Goo with Dirty in 1992. Produced by Butch Vig (producer of Nirvana's Nevermind), the album was much more accessible than the band's past efforts. Dirty produced the single "100%," and eventually went gold. Sonic Youth teamed with Vig once again for 1994's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, which debuted on the US charts at No. 34, only to fall from the spot soon after. After headlining 1995's Lollapalooza festival, they released the LP Washing Machine, which gained them their strongest reviews since Daydream Nation. They released A Thousand Leaves in 1998; NYC Ghosts and Flowers followed in 2000.
