Grant Lee Phillips
Guitarist Grant Lee Phillips has taken a circuitous route in forging his solo career. In the late '80s, he was a member of the highly-touted Shiva Burlesque, who, like so many bands, recorded a couple of well received indie albums and dissolved before their critical cache could pay off. Phillips, bassist Paul Kimble, and drummer Joey Peters struck out on their own, fashioning their uniquely original songs and sound for the denizens of the LA club circuit, officially christening themselves Grant Lee Buffalo in 1991. The band's first single, "Fuzzy," was released on Bob Mould's Singles Only label the following year – the single, coupled with the buzz that GLB was generating in the clubs, resulted in their being signed to the Warner Brothers imprint Slash. GLB's 1993 debut, Fuzzy, was a huge critical success, and garnered the band offers to open for Paul Westerberg and Pearl Jam on the road. 1994 saw the release of the expansive Mighty Joe Moon, which was as much of a critical success (and commercial flop) as its predecessor. Kimble had become the band's de facto producer by this point, a role he continued to play through the band's third and darkest release, 1996's Copperopolis. At the planning stages for GLB's fourth release, Jubilee, Phillips and Peters parted ways with Kimble over the direction of the album -- Kimble felt that the band should continue as it always had in the studio, while Phillips and Peters believed it was time to bring in a name producer. Kimble left the band, and the remaining duo brought in Paul Fox to produce Jubilee, which became the band's biggest commercial success. It wasn't enough to sustain the band, though, as Phillips and Peters were increasingly involved in separate projects. In June 1999, they announced that Grant Lee Buffalo was amicably splitting up. Peters has since done production, soundtrack, and session work, and may re-team with Kimble for a recording project. Phillips has recorded with Robyn Hitchcock and the Eels, and released his first solo album, Ladies' Love Oracle, in February 2000. |
