Morphine
Forever defying labels and astounding critics, this Boston trio breathed fresh oxygen into the mid-90's alt-rock scene with a blend of breathy instrumentation and imaginative composition. While Dana Colley's adventuresome baritone sax, Billy Conway's contrapuntal rhythms and Mark Sandman's spare two-string slide basslines might have suggested a pretentious fusion affair, it was Sandman's honest vocals that iced the cake. Over the course of their seven years, Morphine released five albums of originals and a compilation of B-sides. The often gruff Sandman, also an avid and accomplished photographer, died onstage of a heart attack in Italy in July of 1999. The Night stands as Morphine's posthumous and final release. |
